“MORE OR LESS” 2021 Spring-Summer Collection

The Paris Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2021 was held online due to the global spread of coronavirus infection.

『Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO』 also participated in the online format, presenting a fashion show with handmade puppet dolls and human models.

The 2021 Spring/Summer Collection became a hot topic with the appearance of cute puppet dolls.

The collection will finally go on sale from Saturday 19 December at the official online store and Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO stores.

「People desire perfection and get excited about attaining symmetry, both on the inside and in outward appearance.
The more people try to become perfect, the more uninteresting things get, and beauty is unable to be found.

I think that, to a greater or lesser degree, something that is warped and crooked is more beautiful.

An unreal world.

Fashion is after all, an unreliable thing.
Illogical.
Unequal.
My fashion philosophy.

It is that fashion is the same as comedy and a puppet show.」

The designer Yasuhiro Mihara had this to say about this collection, titled “More or Less”.

For this collection, a new “sprayed” series has been introduced.

The fabric is made using a special technique at a long-established processing plant in Kyoto, giving the items a unique texture as if they were dyed.

The docking designs that have appeared for several seasons, such as front and back docking blousons and shirts that look like two pieces of clothing overlapping each other, and left and right docking that looks like one leg has been dismantled and inserted into a pair of pants, have been further brushed up from what has been presented in the past.

The “resizing” technique, in which large pieces are made smaller by pinching them together, was continued from the previous season, and the playful reconstructive design, in which clothes are dismantled and put back together again, or sleeves are joined together, was updated.

The new model “BLAKEY” sneakers with the brand’s original sole are based on the design of 70’s-80’s basketball shoes.

PETERSON”, “HANK”, and “BAKER” will also be available in a variety of new upper designs.

The men’s and women’s collections will go on sale on the same day, so be sure to visit the store to check out the new items.

WHO is Yasuhiro Mihara?

Yasuhiro Mihara.

The designer of『Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO』.

Yasuhiro Mihara was born in Nagasaki, Japan in June 1972.

What kind of person is Yasuhiro Mihara at the age of 48 ?

What are his creations?

In this first issue of the “WHO is Yasuhiro Mihara?” series, we’ll start by looking at what Mihara has told the media about the background of his shoe production.

〜 The Start of shoe making 〜

Mihara left his hometown in Nagasaki and started making shoes on his own while he was studying art at Tama Art University.

「I went to art college, but at the time there was a 15-30x ratio, and I had to waste two years to get in. I knew I had to figure out how to spend my four years as a wandering student and find a direction to make something as an artist. I know that there are lots of people who are better than me at painting, sculpture and architecture, but what you need to do in order to make a work of art is to have a philosophy of belief, as I’ve realized since I was a little kid. Otherwise, even if you’re good at it, your work will be flimsy and won’t convey anything. My mother used to paint in oils and I often had the opportunity to go to museums, but the curators would get very angry if I touched a painting or sculpture. A third party determines the value of something that the painter or artist likes to create, and a sense of separation and distance is created in order to preserve the value of that work of art. I felt that the conceptual value of a painting, such as the power and beauty of the painting, or the belief that it appeals to me, was not the true value of the painting, but rather the value of the painting as a material object, and I felt that if that happened, people and art would not be in harmony.」

「I thought for a really long time about how to reconcile people and art, and I didn’t end up being that passionate about painting, and it’s very difficult to do something that you can do without sleeping for a couple of days and something that you can have an overwhelming passion for that you can do sleep or wake up and do. The reason I got into shoes is because I had no idea how to make them. My generation had played with plastic models since we were young, so when we saw things, we had some idea of how to design them, but I didn’t know how the tips of the shoes came to be round or how the leather became shiny, and I didn’t even think that wooden molds existed at the end of the 20th century. I started making shoes when I was a sophomore in college, and it was very interesting to work on them without anyone telling me how to do it. As I learn from my mistakes, I make discoveries, and as I meet people and learn from them, the technology I thought I invented is something that people who make shoes take for granted. So I came to think that even if there was a fundamental way of making things, if we didn’t abandon it at some point, something new wouldn’t be born.」

From GRIND, published October 2019

Yasuhiro Mihara now participates in Paris Fashion Week and presents his clothing collection at runway shows every season, but at first he started out crating leather shoes.

Why did he start with leather shoes?

That’s because “I didn’t know how to make them at all” .

Why does the tip curl up and the leather become shiny ……..

Yasuhiro Mihara started making shoes in his own way without being taught by anyone, and went on to make many discoveries and creations.

However, in manufacturing, it is difficult to make a design without the basics of manufacturing.

As you might expect, it is an essential part of shoemaking.

Yasuhiro Mihara had a chance to meet a shoe master in Asakusa, Tokyo.

「”I think I turned it down once, or maybe twice.” He brought me a pair of shoes that looked like a drawstring, made without a wooden mold. I had no intention of teaching him at all, but at the time, Yasuhiro Mihara was working part-time at a nearby wholesale store, and he would come in once in the morning, clean up, go to school, and come back again, going back and forth between Tachikawa and Asakusa twice a day. As I watched him, I sensed his strong will and indomitable spirit. That’s when I started teaching him how to make wooden molds. I already knew he was going to do weird things, so I gave him a rule that you can’t mess with the wooden pattern from the instep. But one occasion he showed me a design which incorporated a “horn” on the toe, like a unicorn.” I said, “What are we going to do with this? I can’t make this,” After that, he made a bunch of things I’d never seen before, and I wasn’t sure what to do with them either, but in those cases, masculinity wins out. I told him clearly that I can’t do what I can’t do, but that I would make things that had potential, so he could bring in whatever he wanted. That was the beginning.

From GRIND, published September 2018

Mr. Hayakawa, a shoemaker who has been supporting the shoemaking of 『MIHARA YASUHIRO』 for many years, talks about Mihara at that time.

After that, in 1996 Yasuhiro Mihara started the original brand with the support of a shoe manufacturer, and in the following year, in 1997, he launched MIHARA YASUHIRO.

It has been 23 years since then.

Nowadays, Yasuhiro Mihara and Mr.Hayakawa hold shoe classes at the Omotesando Hills store to share the joy of shoemaking.

To be continued…

Stay tuned for the next instalement of the “WHO is Yasuhiro Mihara? series.

We are all getting used to a new life style under COVID-19, taking precautionary measures and practicing social distancing when we spend time outside and shopping.

Of course, who doesn’t want to take a walk and go shopping when the sun is shining, even while the end of August heat continues?

So for the first time, we would like to introduce to you our store in Tokyo!

Let us introduce our flagship『Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO』Omotesando Hills store.

The store opened on 18 March 2016.

The inspiration for the interior comes from designer Mihara Yasuhiro’s memory of ateliers in the small towns of Italy and Germany he visited in years gone by.

The cashier space is inspired by a small store in Burlington Arcade in London.

There is also an atelier inside the store that handles made-to-order shoes and shoe repair.

This is a special store that provides shoe-making lessons held by our “shoe master” who has been supporting the brand since it was first launched, and also from the designer Mihara Yasuhiro himself.

It could be an unforgettable experience to have the chance to be taught by the designer Mihara Yasuhiro.

Lessons are currently not available due to COVID-19, but if you are interested, please contact the store.

At our flagship store, you can explore various lines such as our latest collection, iconic popular sneakers, “invisible” goods and even business shoes in a relaxing environment.

“INVISIBLE Leather Goods” MIHARA YASUHIRO’s Iconic Technique

『MIHARA YASUHIRO』’s special “invisible” technique.

We have released various “invisible” items such as leather goods such as wallets and shoes.

Those items have been loved by a lot of our customers since the brand was first launched.

Father’s Day is coming soon!

It comes every year and of course, you never forget to express your gratitude, but question is … what gift will you give your Father this year?

Here, we introduce our beautiful “invisible” items for your Father’s Day gift ideas.

By the way, do you know how these “invisible” items are made?

As the product name suggests, those items are made with the design something invisible.

The name of the technique in Japanese is “Aburidashi”. Some people may imagine it has something to do with the use of fire, however it refers to the technique used to make invisible ink that reveals what is written when heated.

The process requires delicate work by a sophisticated craftsman to make small parts such as a belt buckle appear “invisible” by inserting the part inside the leather.

Through this process, the shape of the part inserted, in this case the buckle, becomes embossed on the surface of the leather item.

There are two main approaches to tanning leather, either by a process known as “chrome tanning” or by “vegetable tanning”. We use the latter for our leather goods which is more time-consuming but produces a higher quality product.

The beauty of using vegetable tanning is that the more you use the product over time, the more you can enjoy the leather as it ages.

When the buckle inside of the leather appears after using it over many years, it will become your one and only original item, almost like an antique.

With the support of our shoe master who has been supporting us since the launch of the brand, we would like to show you a part of the manufacturing process for the shoelaces on one of our “invisible” leather shoes.

Unfortunately, this shoe is not available online, however there are a range of other dress shoes available.
